Rudolf Johannes Howe (called Hans) was born at Dresden in Saxony on 14 January 1912 to Emil Christoph Johann Friedrich Howe (18 October 1875-9 May 1912) and Martha Elisabeth ‘Liesbeth’ von Minckwitz (24 April 1884-16 January 1960). He had one sister, Käthe Sofie Elisabeth Wolf born Howe (27 September 1907-9 May 1978). As Hans’s father died when he was only a few weeks old, his mother took the family to live with her parents. Her father Loth Bernhard von Minckwitz (1845-1928) was a Royal Saxon Forester. On 24 July 1937 Hans married Gertrud Maria Viertel (18 November 1910-22 March 1989) in Dresden and their son Manfred Günter Howe was born on 24 June 1939. Hans worked as a secretary in an office before joining the army. He was in Russia in 1943 and in December 1944 in Kurland. He was captured and was listed as Missing in Action and it was a very long time before his family found out what happened to him and where he is buried.
