Trudy Morley, 97, passed away on Nov. 26, 2018, at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth from complications after a fall on Nov. 15. Trudy was born on April 21, 1921, in Baden-Baden, Germany, the daughter of Hans (John) Lindenmann and Klara (Hedwig) Lindenmann.
Her father built houses for a living and her mother was a homemaker. The family immigrated to the United States, Port of Entry Ellis Island, in 1923, settling in Elgin, Ill., where Trudy grew up. Trudy fell in love with Fred Morley, a dapper, witty, kind and charming gentleman, and the two eloped in Trudy’s convertible in 1940. Being an only child, Fred’s six brothers and sisters, and all of their spouses, were a bonus for Trudy. Over the decades, they hosted many family holiday parties, summer cook-outs, card games and polkas at the club. Cooking and entertaining family and friends were passions for Trudy. She also enjoyed making crafts and was a talented seamstress.
Trudy and Fred had two sons, Douglas Spencer Morley, born in 1944, and Robert Jay Morley, born in 1946. Trudy worked as an operator and supervisor at Illinois Bell & Telephone (AT&T) for 30 years. She and Fred retired to Florida in 1973, very much enjoying their time there and visiting family frequently in their RV. They moved to Maine to be closer to family in 1994, settling in Lamoine. Trudy bravely “geared up” for the change of climate with long johns, flannel and fleece. She was very fortunate to make many wonderful new friends in the Downeast area, including through an active bereavement group that met monthly for years for lunch at Helen’s, which Trudy helped coordinate. Trudy volunteered at the Down East AIDS Network (DEAN) between 2003 until 2016, where she hand-wrote hundreds of thank you notes to donors, greeted clients and participated in a variety of activities to support their mission. At DEAN, Trudy was recognized for outstanding volunteer service in 2005, and in 2011 was given an award for Volunteer of the Century in recognition and appreciation for her continued support and active involvement at their agency and in the community. Trudy enjoyed humor and wit and was a good sport with the silly antics of Fred, her sons and her granddaughters.
Trudy was predeceased by her husband, Fred, in 1999, her son Robert in 2003 and her dogs Otis and Lulu. She is survived by her devoted son, Douglas, her beloved granddaughters Martina Morley and Amy Morley, her ex-daughter-in-law, Terry Morley, her nieces Kathleen Mullen Schneider, Patricia Mullen Cross, Barbara Morley Thorsson and Joan Morley Rich, nephew Michael Morley and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Trudy’s family wishes to express their gratitude for the exceptional care she received at Seaport Village Healthcare.
A celebration of the life of Trudy Morley will be held at Seaport Village located at 19 General Moore Way in Ellsworth on Friday, Dec. 14, from 3:30-5 p.m., officiated by Rev. Sara Hayman. The service will be held on the first floor of the assisted living section. Look for signage. All are welcome to attend.
