Obituary: Star, Peekskill,NY, June 27, 1966:
Funeral services for the late William D. Austin, 90, who died Saturday morning in the community Hospital have been set. They will be held from the United Methodist Church, tomorrow, with the Rev. Dr. Lionel R. Driscoll, the pastor, and the Rev. Deryck Moon officiating. Interment will be made in Hillside cemetery.
He was one of the founders of the Fire Patrol and was a life member of that organization. Arrangements are in charge of the E.O. Curry Funeral Home.
He was born Jan. 11, 1876 in Tompkins Corners, the son of Alonzo and Margaret Tompkins Austin. He had resided in Peekskill for the past 79 years.
He had been a fireman for over 50 years. He was a member of Washington Engine Company and a life member of the Peekskill Fire-Police Patrol. He is a charter member of the Peekskill Carpenters Union, and one of the oldest members of the Methodist Church. He was a carpenter by occupation. He retired at the age of 78.
At one time he served as sexton of the First Methodist Church.
Mr. Austin had been a patient in the hospital for over 7 weeks and was one of those transferred from the Peekskill Hospital to the Community Hospital.
Surviving are his wife, Emma Potter Austin; 1 son, Clifford A. Austin of Suffern, NY; 1 daughter, Mrs. Niles (Gertrude) Hayes of Peekskill; 3 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Willis Kniffen, of North Bergen, N.J.; also several nieces and nephews.
