Local paper 1888:
TOWNSEND – Died, in Newfield, Me., Feb 11, aged 75 years, lacking two days. Mrs. Arvilla Keyes, wife of Rev. Bela Townsend of Newfield, and daughter of the late Sampson Keyes of Wilton, Me., where she was born on Feb. 13, 1813.

At the age of thirteen years she became a member of the M.E.Church. Nov. 15,1837 she was married to Mr. Townsend. In 1846, her husband was licensed to preach by the Otisfield F.B.Q.M., and was ordained three years later. In 1849, she was baptized by her husband and united with the F.B. church to Letter A. No.2, now called Grafton. During twenty-five years of his public ministerial life she was a faithful helpmate to her husband.

In 1858, they moved to Newfield , where they have since lived and have formed a large circle of friends. Their children are three sons and two daughters, all of whom outlive their mother, and of whom only one daughter was with the mother at the time of her last sickness and death. The other children were all in the far West.

Sister Townsend was a faithful wife and mother, and a kind neighbor. She loved the church, its services and ordinances, the Sabbath service and Sunday-school being a special pleasure to her.
She had been a reader THE MORNING STAR for more than forty years, and The Missionary Helper had been beloved by her since its first publications. All the F.B. missionaries were counted as dear by her as personal friends, indeed she had collected pictures of many of them, and her maps of foreign mission fields were carefully studied and well understood.

Her aged husband in his loneliness, after more than fifty years of married life, and her children, have the earnest sympathy of all their friends. Funeral sermon by Rev. W.F. Marshall from the text, “So he giveth his beloved sleep.”
