The son of Abraham and Eva C. (Lundgren) Billings, Adolphus, who was born at Gothenburg, Sweden, immigrated to the United States, arriving at the Port of Boston on Oct. 2, 1853. He became a citizen on Jan. 1, 1855. He married Caroline Swinson, a Swedish immigrant and daughter of Ole, at Boston on Dec. 23, 1855. They were the parents of Arthur R., born in 1857, Robert E., born in 1859; and George A., born in 1862.

Records list Adolphus with various occupations, including as a clerk, collector, and gas fitter while residing with his family in Dorchester. His wife Caroline died in 1891.

Adolphus was 64 years old when he died of Hemiplegia and exhaustion at his home on Child St. in Boston's Hyde Park neighborhood.
