William was born in Boonville, Clinton, Mississippi to Ambrose and Rachel Jane C. Davis Carpenter. After the death of Ambrose and about 1880 Jane moved with her children to Oklahoma. According to son William, because they weren't treated well in Mississippi. William told stories to his granddaughter Barbara about going to Oklahoma in a wagon, going to school with the Indian children and where the teacher carried guns to school for protection. William was the father of six children, Herbert, Olga Carpenter Brown, Swin, Laura Carpenter Brown, Eula Carpenter Carter, and Mary.
