Louisville Metro Police Detective Deidre Mengedoht, 32, served on the force for more than seven years. Detective Mengedoht was assisting a stranded motorist on I-64. Before she was able to exit her vehicle, a semi crossed over from the left-hand lane and slammed into her patrol car, shoving it into the back of the stranded vehicle. Her car was immediately engulfed in flames. The damage was catastrophic. She died instantly.

The drunken driver of the semi has been arrested and charged with murder. MetroSafe confirmed that the accident happened after 2 p.m. Monday under the Belvedere, near Third Street, in the eastbound lanes of I-64.

Deidre was a graduate of Eastern High School, Louisville, Kentucky. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. She began her career at the Louisville Metro Police Department’s Training Academy in March 2011 and became a sworn officer in October 2011.

Deidre was first assigned to train in the 1st Division, then in December she transferred to the 2nd Division as a beat officer and worked her way to rank of Detective.

She served her Louisville community with courage and a passion to protect.

She was preceded by four great grandmothers; Irene Angelillo, Lilly Hefley, Rosie Shaw and Birdie Cassidy; grandfathers; Charles C. Young and Wayne Ackert Sr..

Deidre leaves behind to cherish her memory her son Preston Mengedoht, mom and dad Brenda and Chuck Young, father Wayne Ackert Jr., a sister, Ashley Lewis; nephews Marqus, Isaiah and Michael Lewis.

She is also survived by her grandparents; Gill and Mary Stotts; Judy Young and Marie Ackert as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins.
