Blackbear died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, in the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City.
Stella Bessie Roman Nose Blackbear was born Aug. 4, 1926, to John Roman Nose and Nona Nibbs Roman Nose in Watonga. She was raised north of Roman Nose State Park, which was named after her grandfather and was on his allotment. She attended school through the eighth grade at Centralia Country School and then attended Chillocco Indian School in Newkirk.
In 1952 she married Eugene Blackbear in Watonga. They lived in several locations while following seasonal work, and then settled in Watonga.
Blackbear attended Oklahoma State Tech School in Okmulgee in 1974 and received an applied associate degree in Culinary Arts. She then worked for the tribe in several places, including the Clinton Indian Hospital, and also cooked at Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
She was a proud member of the Cheyenne Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma. Native language was her first language before learning English, and she taught her native language at the University of Oklahoma.
Blackbear was very traditional, and was a member of the Native American Church. She enjoyed going to garage sales, playing bingo, beading, sewing, photography, reading and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Anthony Taua; two daughters, Frances Doctor and Imogene Blackbear; three sisters, Bida Roman Nose, Amanda Roman Nose and Anne Seger; and three brothers, Fred Roman Nose, Milan Roman Nose and John Roman Nose Jr.
Survivors include three daughters, Roberta Osage of Weatherford, Wilma Whitebird and husband Malcom of Watonga, and Ida Parton and husband Kenneth of Apache; five sons, Larry Roman Nose and wife Pauline, Eugene Blackbear Jr., Rex Paul Blackbear and wife Phyllis, Ralph Blackbear and wife Senoira, and Fred Blackbear, all of Watonga.
She is also survived by 39 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
