Nathaniel Pate Smith, of this city, one of the oldest and best known citizens of the county, died at his home on Wilcox Avenue, Saturday afternoon, February 20th, at five-thirty o'clock, after a brief illness. Mr. Smith, who would have been 86 years of age had he lived another week, had been in ill health for about a year, but in recent months had regained much of his health and strength and even early in the week of his death had been out, attending to business. A sudden attack of influenza was too much for his already heavily taxed body and the end came quickly.

Familiarly known as "Uncle Nat" Mr. Smith has been an outstanding figure in the life of Marion for many years. About 35 years ago Mr. Smith moved to Marion, and occupied a home which he built on the site of the Marion Public Library. Prior to that time he had resided in the Reedy Creek neighborhood, where he was born and spent the most of his life.

He was a Confederate soldier, having fought with distinction throughout the war. He was never happier than when discussing Civil War days with his old comrades, few of whom are left to witness his passing over the river. A splendid business man, gaining his experience and his profits in the hard school of experience, Mr. Smith accumulated a bountiful store of worldly goods, and through wise investment and thrift weathered all of the financial storms which have passed over his head. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church.
