Joseph “Joe” William McCluney, 85, of 497 East Junior High Road, Gaffney, S.C. passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018 at his residence.

He was born February 7, 1933 in Gaffney, S.C. and was the former husband of Helen Davis McCluney. He was the son of the late Frank McCluney and Leila Moore McCluney, grandson of the late Dr. Joseph McCluney and Emma Parker McCluney, Calvin Moore and Cynthia McCraw Moore.

Joe was a graduate of Port Royal Military Academy of Charleston, S.C. and attended The Citadel. He was a businessman, owner of McCluney’s Real Estate and Rental Property, a certified bondsman, a longhorn cattle and tree farmer, worked with pallets and practiced sustainable forestry. He owned and operated the first automated saw mill in Cherokee County, a historian and loved genealogy. Joe was a great humanitarian and loved his family. He helped many less fortunate people over the years.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, a charter member of CHAPS, and a member of the National Rifle Association. Joe was interested in politics and his belief was to vote for the person and what he stood for regardless of the party. He was an avid reader having read and studied all of the encyclopedias. He enjoyed picking his guitar, gardening and collecting antiques.

Surviving are three daughters, Deborah Jean McCluney, Sheila Wood, both of Gaffney and Janice Gibson of Inman, S.C.; his grandson, Alexander Joseph McCluney-Dover; Denora Mullinax and Larry Ray Easler; Zeb Wood raised in the home and his wife, April of Boiling Springs, S.C.; a former son-in-law, Jeffrey Wilson Dover who he loved as a son; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and grandparents he was preceded in death by a brother, John Frank McCluney and a nephew, William McCluney.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Joe’s caregivers, Ernest “Petey” Thompson, Kayla Hughey and Michael Hughey.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Ashby Blakely officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of Deborah J. McCluney, 423 S. Petty Street, Gaffney.
