Son of John G. Birkmeier who began a monument business along the banks of the Miami-Erie Canal in Delphos, Ohio in 1880.

Alexander C. Birkmeier expanded that business to Fort Wayne, Indiana selling monuments from his bicycle and sending orders to the Delphos based operation. in 1929, he built a home for the Fort Wayne business to simplify operations for the family. The same spanish-eclectic style building is still used today and is located at 2323 West Main Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
