Gangster. John Ashley (also known as King of the Everglades and Swamp Bandit) and his gang were notorious desperados that terriorized Florida's southeast coast for more than 15 years from murder, bank robbery, hijacking, bootlegging and moon shing to piracy on the seas. His speciality was rum running from the West End in the Bahamas into the hideouts south of Stuart, FL. Accused of killing his partner Desoto Tiger, whom they were otter hide traders. He was accidently shot by a new member in his gang that later left him with a glass eye and wearing a patch over his left eye. John was in prison three times. John was hand cuffed and killed by the St. Lucie County and the Palm Beach County officers on the Sebastian River Bridge.

John's sweetheart was Laura Upthegrove known as "Queen of the Everglades". John H. Ashley and Laura Upthegrove were sweethearts; no marriage records are found.

The original Ashley house (off of AIA which is now Hobe Sound) was burned to the ground after the John Ashley and his cohorts robbed a bank in Stuart and the posse came looking for them. The gang wasn't at the house but the posse drug John's parents out of the home beat his father for information and then set the home on fire.

John's glass eye was stolen from his grave.
