Usually cast as a wise cracking reporter or news photographer, he was recognized mostly for wearing a backward tilted hat with a cigarette butt or gum in his mouth. Early in his career(1930's), he performed with his sister, Elsa Newell at the "Twice Nightly Variety Show" at the Holborn Empire Theatre in Holborn, London, England which included other cast members such as the Laurel Brothers, Billie Houston, Will Hay, et al . Further actively commencing his Hollywood career in the 1930's, he quickly became memorable for his recurring role as Alfalfa's father in the 'Our Gang' shorts. Other more notable film credits include: Libeled Lady (1936), Wife vs Secretary(1936), The Mandarin Mystery(1936), The Big Show(1936), Robinson Crusoe of Clipper Island (1936 serial), Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939), Alfalfa's Aunt (1939, Short), Mysterious Doctor Satan(1940), Who Is Hope Schuyler?(1942), the Oscar-winning film The Lost Weekend(1945), Dick Tracy vs. Cueball (1946), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), Ma and Pa Kettle Go to Town (1950), High Noon(1952), Abbott and Costello Go to Mars (1953) and Wichita (1955).
