Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, then on the staff of Major General James Shields as an acting Aide-de-Camp. He was then commissioned Colonel and commander of the 174th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on June 27, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services during the war". After the war he entered politics, serving as Mayor of Delaware, Ohio in 1866. He was elected to represent Ohio's 9th District in the United States House of Representatives, serving form 1877 to 1879.
