Gerald Abell, 64, a World War II Army veteran and a resident of the Town of Poughkeepsie since 1957, died Tuesday at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.

Prior to residing in Poughkeepsie, he lived in Brooklyn.

Mr. Abell was secretary and treasurer of Capital Bakeries in Poughkeepsie.

He was a member of Temple Beth-El, past president of the Harding Club, chairman of the United Way, a member of the Exchange Club and Poughkeepsie Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Democrats to Elect Hamilton Fish, and a director of the Jewish Community Center in Poughkeepsie.

Born April 29, 1927, in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Isadore Abell and Lena Bernstein Abell, who survives in Brooklyn.

Mr. Abell was a graduate of Brooklyn College and attended New York University where he obtained his master's degree.

In 1955, in Brooklyn, he married the former Rhoda Friedman, who survives at home.

Other survivors include a son, Keith Abell; two daughters, Ellen Abell and Lisa Frisone; a brother, Norman Abell; and several nieces and nephews.

A service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday at Temple Beth-El, 118 Grand Ave., Poughkeepsie. Rabbi Charles Feinberg will officiate.

Burial will be in Beth-El Cemetery, Town of Poughkeepsie.
