James Manford Abernathy Jr., age 86, of Fithian, Illinois, passed on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2007, at 2:00 a.m. at Carle Hospital in Urbana, Illinois.

James was born Aug. 18, 1921 in Potomac, Illinois to James M. and Carrie Kirkpatrick Abernathy Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Abernathy of Fithian; four daughters, Judy (Bob) Smith of Danville, Donna (Bob) Lamb of Ada, Ohio, Kathy (Mark) James of Austin, Texas, and Debra (Sam) Sands of Lewisburg, Tennessee; one son, Gary (Irene) Abernathy of Urbana; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded by his parents, two grandchildren, one brother and three sisters.

James retired in 1978 as an operating engineer and continued to work in area gravel pits after retirement. A member of Local 841, he enjoyed watching Animal Planet and was a talented musician who played at the Wolford Hotel in Danville while it was broadcast live on the radio.
