Harold Keith Akes, son of Warren and Laura (Buckingham) Akes, was born November 28, 1922, in Decatur City, Iowa and died at the Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, Iowa on December 30, 2018, at the age of 96 years.

Harold attended school in LeRoy, Iowa and graduated in 1940. In 1942, he married Zelma Oliver and became father of a daughter, Joann.

During World War II Harold served his country in the United States Army from January 1943, to January 1946, with overseas duty in the Philippines and then Japan near the end of World War II.

On June 11, 1948, Harold married Virginia Henson of LeRoy. The couple first lived in Albany, Missouri where Harold attended watch making school. They lived in Osceola, Iowa then Eldora before moving to Iowa City, Iowa, where they lived for 31 years. After he retired as an equipment technician at the University of Iowa they moved back to Osceola in 1984.

Harold was a very loving, generous, and devoted husband, who enjoyed reading and visiting with friends. He would strike up a conversation with anyone he met on the street and become acquainted.

Preceding him in death were his parents; daughter, Joann Green and husband, Dick; and brothers, Dean “Static” Akes and wife, Lila, and Wayne “Chigger” Akes. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Virginia Akes of Osceola; four grandchildren; a number of great and great, great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Marion Akes of Osceola; nephew, Verle Akes and wife, Arlene of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; niece, Cheryl Sjolin and husband, Jeff of Atlantic, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
