He had an older sister Gertrude Anna (b. 17 Dec 1910), and younger siblings: Charles Frederick (b. 11 May 1915) and Helen W. He grew up in Dedham where his father was an auto mechanic. His paternal grandparents were: Charles A. & Carrie E. (Edgett) Barnes, emigrants from Canada; maternal grandparents: William & Delia (Timilty) Nolan.
He married Ruth C Steimle.
