Helen Rosella Schraufnagel, age 94, of Rochester, Minnesota and a former Rhinelander resident, passed away on Monday, December 17, 2018 at Madonna Meadows in Rochester, Minnesota.

Helen was born on Wednesday, May 21, 1924 in Glidden, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Rose (Pryer) Gottinger. As a child, Helen lived in Glidden and was a 1942 graduate of Glidden High School. She was married on August 29, 1942 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church in Glidden, Wisconsin to Henry “Hank” Alexander Schraufnagel. After they were married, Hank returned to serving his country during WWII and Helen lived and worked in Milwaukee for a short time. She moved to Rhinelander and lived with family and waited for Hanks return, which occurred in 1945. He no sooner returned from serving his country when in 1946 Helen developed Polio. She was able to make a complete recovery. The couple purchased a home in Rhinelander, living on Messer Street until 1961. They then moved to Woodland Drive where Hank had built a home. Helen was a devoted wife and loving mother. She enjoyed gardening, and her love of learning never stopped as she took classes on woodworking, upholstering, canoeing and cross-country skiing. One of her big dreams was to continue her education and in the 1970’s she attended U. W. Stevens Point where she graduated with high honors with a degree in Social Work. She then was employed with some of the communities in northern Wisconsin and later was employed as a Counselor at Lincoln Hills. Helen joined the Women’s Resource Bureau at Nicolet College where she was a Grief Counselor for ten years from 1982 until 1992. She returned to college attending U.W. Madison in the mid 1990’s and earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work which she was most proud of.

Helen always enjoyed traveling with Henry to Florida and after he passed away, her trips to Hawaii, Mexico and her yearly trips to Texas to stay with her daughter. She loved to read and enjoyed writing. Helen was involved with the School of the Arts studies and offered housing to students who needed a place to stay. She was always very active in the Catholic Church Community and was involved in CCD, the Eucharistic Ministry and also was involved in Jail Ministry through Oneida County. She loved knitting and crocheting with a group of local women from the community.

She will be remembered for her cooking and candy making, especially her truffles.

She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, especially her children; Sandra Forrest of Glenbeulah, Wisconsin, Rod Schraufnagel of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Daniel (Helga) Schraufnagel of Rochester, Minnesota, Cynthia (John) Miller of Cleburne, Texas, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband; Henry Schraufnagel on January 8, 1982 and by two brothers and four sisters.

The visitation for Helen will take place on Saturday, December 22, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, located at the corner of King and Conro Street. Fr. Kevin Farrell will be officiating.

Immediately following the mass there will be a procession to Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Cemetery.
