She married her high school sweetheart, Noble John Kiernan, in the seaside town on October 7, 1943, and, together, they raised their six children there, until the family moved to Lunenburg, Mass., in 1966. John and Lee were married for almost 50 years, until his death in 1990. It was the big farmhouse in Lunenburg that her 11 grandchildren will lovingly remember, having spent so many Christmases, Thanksgivings, and summer vacations there.
An accomplished artist, Lee graduated from Mass College of Art. Her impressive drawings are displayed in the homes of all her children and grandchildren. Her creativity didn’t stop at drawing. She sewed, knit, and crocheted with amazing speed and precision, one Christmas making every grandchild a sweater, another year making everyone a blanket. She was always working on some creative project. But her life’s work, and one she was profoundly proud of, was that of a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family will remember her laughter, her creativity, her apple pies, and her love of the Boston Red Sox, among a million other things. She was the definition of a matriarch, a very strong and smart woman, and she will be greatly missed.
She is survived by five of her children, Noble John (Jay) Kiernan, Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Raynham; David Kiernan and his wife, Linda, of Littleton; Dana Kiernan and his wife, Barbara, of Marblehead; Linda Kiernan, of Ashby; and Betty Doherty and her husband, Edward, of Holden. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Lee Lancy of Marblehead. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family would also like to thank Diane Phillips, Lee’s wonderful and loving caregiver over the past two years.
Private graveside services will be held in Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead. MA.
The Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Mass Ave., Lunenburg, MA, has been entrusted with Funeral arrangements. See www.masciarellifamily funeralhomes.net for further information.
