He spelled his last name as "Ashcroft," when he was a young man, although census enumerators later spelled it as "Ashcraft." The names of his parents are not known. Some records indicate that he was born in Ohio; but other records indicate that he was born in Kentucky.

When he married his first wife, Elizabeth Jennings Reddington, on March 13, 1821, on their original marriage record, the spelling of his last name is not 100% clear. The record is attached. His last name appears to be spelled as "Ashoroft" or "Ashoraft."

But when his wife Elizabeth died, the spelling of her last name (his last name) on her gravestone was clearly "Ashcroft." This is the proof that he spelled his last name as "Ashcroft."

In later census reports, the census enumerator spelled his last name as "Ashcraft," because that was how it sounded, and that was how other people spelled it. In fact, Joseph could not read or write, as he indicated in the 1850 Census Report, so he could not even tell the enumerator how to spell his last name. Joseph's children spelled their last name as "Ashcraft," because that was how it sounded.

When he married Elizabeth Jennings Reddington, on March 13, 1821, her first husband had apparently recently disappeared, after he was convicted of counterfeiting, sent to prison, and released from prison. She either formally divorced him, or divorced him for abandonment, so she would then be able to marry Joseph Ashcroft.

Elizabeth and Joseph had a son named Thomas Powers (born October 20, 1823). But Elizabeth died, in June of 1828.

Just five months after Elizabeth died, Joseph married Sarah Lawrence Milburn, on November 20, 1828. She was also a widow. Her husband John Milburn had died, in August of 1827. Sarah had two children with John Milburn (John and Nancy).

Joseph and Sarah lived in Dearborn County, Indiana, and they had at least four children: William F. (born March 1, 1832); Lydia Jane (born November 10, 1842); Henry Marion Francis (born 1844); and Sarah A. (born August 6, 1847). All of their children spelled their last name as "Ashcraft."

Their son William got married to Nancy Buffington; he died on February 24, 1916. Their daughter Lydia got married to William Anderson Baldwin; she died on December 20, 1920. Their son Henry got married to Alice Williams; he died on March 22, 1919 in Missouri. And their daughter Sarah got married to John N. Armstrong; she died on August 28, 1887.

Joseph's second wife Sarah died, sometime between 1860 and 1870. In the 1870 Census Report, Joseph was a widow and living with Thomas Jennings, his wife Catherine, and their children, in Moore's Hill, Indiana (Dearborn County). Thomas was the younger brother of Joseph's first wife Elizabeth.

By 1880, Joseph was living with his son William and his family in Deckertown, Indiana (Knox County). Joseph died on August 15, 1887, in Knox County, Indiana. It is not known where he was buried.
