STEWART, Don H. of Lebanon, Ohio, formerly of Trotwood, Ohio, passed away Friday, Aug. 1st at the age of 98. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Ellen in March of 1993, sisters Polly Frey, Betty Caughlin, Marge Shaw, and brother Bill. He is survived by one sister, Laurel June Jones of Lima, Oh, and his four children: Judy (Carl) Pilkington of Urbana, Ohio, Nancy Stewart of Urbana, Ohio, Tad (Phyllis) Stewart of Eaton, Ohio, and Betsy (George) Welch of Huntsville, Alabama. Also nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was born in Deshler, Ohio on Nov. 15th, 1915, spent most of his childhood in West Milton, and later moved to Dayton, where he graduated from Stivers High School. He attended Miami University, where he earned his way by waiting tables, typing papers, and playing trumpet in the famous Campus Owls dance band, and graduated in 1938 with a degree in Music Education. He began his teaching career in New Philadelphia, and later moved to Vandalia. Don was a WWII veteran, having served in the Navy as a signalman aboard a Navy transport ship. After the war, he eventually returned to teaching, and spent the rest of his career with the Trotwood-Madison school system. He earned a Master's Degree in school administration from Miami in 1952 and became principal of Broadmoor Elementary School when it opened in 1955. He served as principal of Shilohview Elementary from 1967 until his retirement. While just a senior in high school, Don became one of the original members of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. He also served more than 60 years as choir director at Belmont (EUB) United Methodist Church, Trotwood United Church of Christ, Trotwood Church of the Brethern, and Otterbein Home (director of the Men's Chorus). Typical of Don's generous nature, he willed his body to the Wright State Medical School. A memorial service for Don will be held on Sunday, Aug. 24th, at 2:00 in the chapel at Otterbein Home, located on Rt. 741 in Lebanon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Otterbein Lebanon Benevolent Fund or Otterbein Hospice.
