Shirley graduated high school in Rutland, Vermont. After graduating, she moved to Maine, married Burleigh Carleton in 1950 and had three children. She was an active member of the Winterport Women's Club, Winterport Library Committee, Historical Society and the Grange. She was a school teacher and especially enjoyed her work with students that needed a little extra help. She also enjoyed her time with her many close friends and neighbors. When she was not with family or friends was an avid reader.
She was predeceased by her husband, Burleigh; two sons, Brian and Craig; two sisters, Gladys DiPierre and Janet Langley; and several beloved in-laws. Announcements will be forthcoming regarding graveside services to be held in the spring at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Winterport.
