Son of John and Ann (Simpson) Davis, who removed to Ohio from Montgomery County, Maryland, with at least four of their eight children — William, Samuel, Joshua, and Joseph — in 1816. The family settled in Perry Township, Franklin County, OH, in 1818.

John Davis was a Revolutionary War soldier who "enlisted [in] Henry Darrah's Company, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 1778. Captain in Pennsylvania Regiment. Served from 1777 to 1781. Born in Montgomery Co., Maryland in 1761." [D. A. R. information]. Ann Simpson "was a messenger and carried orders from General Washington to the other commanders in the Revolutionary War in 1779 and 1780. Born 1863, Bucks County, Pennsylvania." [D. A. R.]

In 1825, Samuel built a home on land he purchased from his father on the east bank of the Scioto River, about a mile from the bridge in what is now Dublin, OH. He married Matilda (Sells) Kilbourn, daughter of John Sells and widow of William Kilbourn, in Franklin County, on June 11, 1825. Samuel and Matilda had eight children, of whom only three lived to maturity (Charles, Matilda and Marilla).

Mr. Davis served as Justice of the Peace and was elected Franklin County Commissioner. He was last enumerated on the 1880 US Census, living in the home he built in 1825. Marilla, who never married, cared for her father in his old age.
