A FORMER JACKSON MAN MEETS DEATH AT THE HANDS OF AN ASSASSIN
He Died While in the Discharge of His Duty as a Police Officer--His Body Will Arrive in Jackson Saturday
Sunday noon, John Downey, of the Foster Furniture Company, received a telegram from his brother-in-law, Edward Cudihee, of Seattle, Washington, conveying the sorrowful intelligence that his brother, Miner Cudihee, had been fatally stabbed, dying at 11 o'clock Friday night.
Miner Cudihee was an officer on the police force of Seattle, of which his brother, Edward, is chief detective. It is presumed by relatives of the dead man that he met his death while in the discharge of his duties as an officer of the city. Miner was well and favorably known in Jackson, in the vicinity of which he was born and reared. Some two years since he went West, subsequently being appointed to a position as patrolman on the police force. He came east last May to attend the funeral of his brother, Dan, who died in Chicago. He spent some time with his relatives in this city and at Michigan Centre, taking his departure for his western home on May 30. Mr Cudihee was 22 years of age this month and was a magnificently proportioned man-an athlete, in fact.
The relatives telegraphed last evening to have the body forwarded to Jackson and it is expected to reach here by Saturday in charge of Edward Cudihee. The funeral is expected to take place Saturday from St Mary's church.

On the evening of July 30. 1892, off duty Tacoma Police Officers Minor Cudihee and John Kenna were walking on McKinley Hill when they encountered Delmont Borders, 37 and David Seale, 26, laying on the sidewalk at the northeast corner of 35th and east "H" Street. Although unarmed, Cudihee identified himself as a police officer and asked the intoxicated men what they were doing. They responded with curses and Cudihee ordered them to leave, they assaulted the two officers. Seale stabbed Cudihee under the right arm and slashed Officer Kenna across the back of his overcoat while Borders attacked Kenna with a large rock.
The assailants fled on foot while Kenna helped Cudihee to a nearby house, leaving the dying officer in the care of the resident while he went for help. At 9:35 PM the patrol wagon, which was also serving as the city ambulance, was dispatched from the police headquarters but Officer Cudihee had died by the time it arrived. Both suspects were captured shortly after midnight and taken to the city jail, but when a lynch mob formed outside, Police Chief Lincoln Davis spirited the accused men to county jail. In a tragic ending to this case, Seale's claimed self defense and was acquitted at trial.

A native of Jackson, Michigan, his survivors included his parents and a brother, Edward, who was a Seattle police officer and later served two terms as King County Sheriff.
