Ann(e) Roberts was the daughter of Owen & Jane/Jean (Williams) Roberts, members of Gwynedd Mtg in Philadelphia Co. Her parents, Owen Roberts, son of William Roberts of Philadelphia and Jane Williams, daughter of Jno Williams of Gwynedd in the county aforesaid, late Deceased, were married 9mo/Nov 16, 1737 at Gwynedd Mtg after declaring their intentions on 24 Sep 1737 and 30 Oct 1737. Their marriage certificate is extant, however many names of the witnesses are obliterated.

No extant record of birth for Ann has been discovered, however her parentage is evidenced by the Will of "Owen Roberts of Shelburne Parish, Loudoun Co, VA", dated 11 Jan 1777, proved 14 Apr 1777, Loudoun Co, VA, Will Bk B, pg 169 wherein he named his daughter Ann Griffith and gr-son Joseph Burson.

Ann's parents were members of Gwynedd Mtg from their 1737 marriage to 1747 when Owen Roberts and his family received a Certificate of Removal to Philadelphia Mtg.

On 6 May 1754, Owen Roberts and his family were members of Buckingham Mtg, Bucks Co as he requested, through a friend, a certificate to Philadelphia for himself and wife. They were received at Philadelphia Mtg on 29 Nov 1754.

[By 1731, Joseph & Rachel (Potts) Burson, and his family were also members of Buckingham Mtg. Joseph & children Rachel, Benjamin & Deborah (wife Rachel was not named) Burson removed from Buckingham Mtg, Bucks Co and were received at Fairfax Mtg, VA on 8mo 25, 1753]

On 22 Dec 1755 Jane, the wife of Owen Roberts, and children Ann, Catherine & William, returned to Gwynedd Mtg; thru the "misconduct of her husband who lately absconded, she returns to her relations; the eldest, being grown, is clear of marriage engagements.

By the end of 1760, Ann Roberts was in VA as she married Benjamin, son of Joseph Burson, on 23 Dec 1760 at Fairfax Mtg, Loudoun Co, VA. Her parents Owen & Jane/Jean Roberts sign the Certificate directly under Benjamin's father Joseph Burson, followed by Ann's siblings Catherine & William Roberts, etc. The witness list is extensive; I have attached a copy of same to this memorial.

Benjamin & wife Ann (Roberts) had 2 sons (unnamed in the Will) before his death in Sep 1769; one of those sons was Joseph as he is named as a grandson in the 1777 Will of Owen Roberts [VA Loudoun Co Will Bk B, pg 326]

[In 1768, Owen Roberts witnessed the Will of Jonas Potts, farmer of Cameron Parish, and in 1769 he is named one of the Executors, with his daughter Ann, for the Estate of Benjamin Burson. In 1770 Owen Roberts was one of the appraisers of the estate of Jonas Potts, farmer]

Benjamin Burson died in Sep 1769, leaving a Will dtd 19 Sep 1769, prv 10 Oct 1769, VA Will Bk A, pg 222. Benjamin named his wife Ann and two unnamed minor sons in this Will. Joseph Burson appears to have been one of those sons as he is named with his mother Ann Griffith in the 1777 Will of Owen Roberts. [VA Loudoun Co Will Bk B, pg 326] After the death of her husband Benjamin Burson and by Oct 1773, Ann (Roberts) Burson married Isaac Griffith, widower of Ann Burson (d.1772) - Benjamin's sister.

On 22 Sep 1773, Isaac Griffith acquaints the Meeting at Gunpowder, MD of his Intention of Marriage with Ann Burson a Friend of Fairfax Monthly Meeting.

On 27 Nov 1773, Fairfax Mtg reported that widower Isaac Griffith of Gunpowder MM married contrary to discipline widow Ann (Roberts) Burson of Fairfax MM; the meeting considered them brother & sister by Affinity, she being the widow of his former wife's brother & the marriage was disapproved. Isaac Griffith was disowned by Gunpowder Mtg on 26 Jan 1774 and his wife Ann (Roberts) Burson was disowned by Fairfax Mtg on 28 May 1774.

Isaac Griffith had 12 verified children with his 1st wife Ann Burson and no issue with his 2nd wife Ann (Roberts) Burson. That his 1st wife Ann (Burson) had died before 1772 is evidenced by the 1772 marriage certificate of their daughter Ann Griffith to Aquila Price wherein it states "Ann Griffith, daughter of Isaac Griffith and Ann His Wife, Deceased" at Gunpowder Mtg, MD.

[All records are extant; the matter of their marriage contrary to discipline continued for a period of over 8 years between Fairfax Mtg in VA, Gunpowder Mtg in MD, and included Fairfax Quarterly Mtg & Baltimore Yearly Mtg from whom the Monthly Meetings requested assistance]

On 29 Sep 1781, Gunpowder Mtg reports that Isaac Griffith submitted a letter of condemnation dated 15 Dec 1780, and it was supported by a letter from Fairfax Mtg which was read and received as satisfaction for his misconduct; by 1783 he was again a Member. Some claim he was buried at a Baptist Church, however he fought too hard to remain a Quaker and was still mentioned in Gunpowder Mtg minutes as late as 1783.

On 29 Apr 1797, Gunpowder Mtg took a paper of condemnation of Ann Griffith, wife of Isaac Griffith (it does not state "widow"), under consideration; on 23 Dec 1797 Fairfax Mttg accepted Ann Griffith's paper as satisfaction; on 31 Mar 1798, Gunpowder Mtg also accepted Ann Griffith's condemnation.

Ann (Roberts) Burson-Griffith disappears from the records of both meetings after this date.
