Ray was born in Nixon and lived there most of his life until his parents were divorced and his family moved to nearby Leesville. He enlisted in the Marines 3 March 1969, at a San Antonio Recruiting Office.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 4 October 1969, Ray was assigned to Hotel Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Hotel Company was on a patrol, about 4 kilometers west southwest from the Que Son Airfield, when the Marines encountered hostile forces. Ray was wounded by hostile rifle fire and was med-evac to the Station Hospital in Danang for treatment of his wounds. While there Ray died of his wounds 30 April from gunshots he sustained 24 April.
Survived by his mother, Ines Louise West Robinson of Leesville, Texas and his father; Willie B Baker of San Antonio, Texas.
