Psychiatrist, Physician, Neurologist. In 1881 he identified what would be called dyslexia. As the head of the "idioten-Anstalt Neuerkerode" (Institution for people with mental illness) he learned that a number of his patients were not mentally ill but simply could not coordinate their auditory and visual aspects of reading. Dr. Berkhan had come to notice that certain people with highly developed intelligence and functioning abilities had difficulty learning to read. The term dyslexia would not be coined till 1887 by German Optomologist, Rudolph Berlin.
