He graduated from Memphis State University, and in 1966, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country for two years. Upon discharge, he worked for the Coca Cola Company in Atlanta, GA and then for Riviana Foods in Memphis, TN. He retired from Riviana Foods as Quality Control Manager in 2006.
Jerry often said that some of the best years of his life were spent in the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity when he was student at Memphis State. He loved his Tigers at that time and he continued to watch Tiger football and basketball throughout his life. Jerry loved music, especially 50s rock and roll and all Memphis music. He also said that the best thing he ever did was marry his wife, Camilla. Jerry loved being with family and the friends he made over the years.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Camilla Walker Barber; sons, Collin (Jeanie) and Jeffrey Barber; brother, Melvin Clyde Barber, III (Nancy); and three grandchildren Wesley, Aidan and Stella Barber (Collin and Jeanie).
The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 a.m. and funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, February 13 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family requests memorial donations be directed to Methodist Alliance Hospice.
