Born in Monteforte Cilento, province of Salerno, Italy, on June 19, 1915, daughter of Giuseppe and Carmella Mondeli Maffuccio, she came to the United States with her family in 1922 and attended Pittsfield schools.
Mrs. Mazzeo left school at a young age to work full time to help support her family. She was employed at the former Elmvale Worsted Co. until her marriage and later worked as a seamstress from her home for many years.
She was a communicant of Mount Carmel Church. She enjoyed animals and had a number of dogs. An accomplished gardener, she grew vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed crocheting and knitting.
Her husband, Joseph A. Mazzeo, whom she married Jan. 25, 1941, in Mount Carmel Church, died Jan. 23, 1979.
She leaves two sons, Michael J. Mazzeo of Pittsfield and Joseph M. Mazzeo of Novato, Calif.; two daughters, Antoinette Perry of Pittsfield, with whom she made her home, and Rosemary Mazzeo of Pittsfield; two brothers, Frank J. Maffuccio of Pittsfield and Daniel J. Maffuccio of Anacortes, Wash.; a sister, Mary C. Butterworth of Pittsfield; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Lucy C. Maffuccio Mazzeo will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, at 9 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-BENCIVENGA FUNERAL HOME, 5 Elm St., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church by the Rev. Joseph Fellin, CSS, officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Calling hours will be today, Wednesday, from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. She was predeceased by two brothers, Ralph and Dominic A. Maffuccio, and two sisters, America Reynolds and Irene Kimber. Mrs. Mazzeo was the center of her family, cooking for a large assortment of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on Sundays and holidays, and spoiling her dogs with food. As a seamstress, she developed a wide network of friends and acquaintances. She died at her home Monday night surrounded by her family; she will be greatly missed by many family and friends.
