Deceased was the daughter of David and Lucy Chittenden, and was born in North Guilford Connecticut February 1, 1815. She was one of a family of eight children: three sons and five daughters.

Her father, David Crittenden, traced his ancestry back to William Chittenden, one of a company of twenty-five who came from the south of England, sailing May 20 1639.

Abram Benton at the age of 18 came to Fairfield, afterwards called Mendon, with his mother, [and] two brothers, Daniel and Joel, and their wives, to join an older brother, Erastus, who had settled here the year previous.

Three years later, he returned to North Guilford, where they were married August 31 1837. They lived a worthy and exemplary life together fifty-eight years, when the husband was removed from the family circle.

Two children were born to them: Sarah Jane, widow of S. S. Arnold; and Ruth Frances, widow of A. J. Leggat, who still remain, together with five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
