An interesting story of their courtship, or lack of it, has been passed down from generation to generation.  When Annie was 15 years of age, John rode up to her home on horseback.  When he arrived, her father was splitting wood.  Young John picked up an axe and helped him.  Abraham's curiosity got the best of him and he asked the reason for his visit.  "Well," John said, "I came to ask if I could have Annie for my wife."  Abraham asked if he did not think she was a bit too young.  John said, "Can she cook 'mush'?" "Oh yes" was her father's reply.  Well then it was all right with John.  So they lay down their axes and went to the house.  Yes, Annie would have him for her husband, her father married them; they had supper; then rode to his home on horseback to begin their wedded life.
