Mrs. Jo Nell Barksdale

Jackson - Mrs. Jo Nell Barksdale, age 81, of Jackson, Mississippi, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at Manhattan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Barksdale was an accomplished nonfiction writer and cookbook author. "Special Menus for Very Special Occasions", compiled by The Salvation Army Auxiliary of Jackson, was her first publication. As well as writing food articles and cookbook reviews for several of Mississippi's leading newspapers, Mrs. Barksdale co-authored "Great Desserts of the South", "Hors D'Oeuvres Everybody Loves", "Hors D'Oeuvres Everybody Loves II" and "The One Hundred Greatest Desserts of the South". She served as the executive director of the Mississippi Writers Association, helping to organize the Eudora Welty Film and Fiction Festival at Millsaps College. Mrs. Barksdale had a passion for researching her family's extensive Southern Mississippi history. She loved writing, and graduated from The University of Southern Mississippi after pursuing a degree in English and the Classics, in her later years.

Mrs. Barksdale was born in New Augusta, Mississippi on February 9, 1937. She is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin S. Ruffin, Sr. and Nell Ruffin; her husband, John Woodson Barksdale, III; and her brothers, Benjamin S. Ruffin, Jr., and Ted Williams Ruffin. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Hickman. She leaves behind her children, Mary Wilson (James), Bethany Barksdale, Jayne LaRue, Emily Threlkeld (Al), and Kathy Sims (Kevin). She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Jimmi Lauren and Danni Wilson, Rocky Clark, Valerie Moore, Ike and Gracie LaRue, Kaylee and Kate Sims, as well as her great-grandchildren, Carson Jack, Bryson, Brady, and Bristol.

A graveside memorial service will be held in New Augusta, Mississippi, on January 4, at 1:00 p.m
