Martha Louisa was the daughter of John and Nancy "Croft" Tarrant. About 1843, she married Samuel Jefferson Mordecai, son of Isaac D. and Zipporah "Russell" Mordecai. They were the parents of 10 children. She is buried beside her daughter, Margaret F. "Mordecai" Neal, who died 10 Apr 1887. On Maggie's tombstone part of the inscription reads: "and her mother lies by her side."

This "tid-bit" was found in a book entitled, "Lamar County Alabama, A History to 1900" by Rose Marie Smith, 1987. This is about the Mordecais:
"Buried treasure: In May of 1888, Mrs. S.J. Mordecai instructed her family, just before she died, that they should dig in the outhouse. When they did so, they found a pitcher containing a gallon and a half of silver and $240.00 in gold. In all there was $700.00, all in very old coins."
