Pfc. Matthew Bean of Pembroke, was a 2003 graduate of Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston where he was a member of the football and wrestling teams. He also enjoyed judo, loved the outdoors, snowboarding and fishing. He then attended the University of Massachusetts Stockbridge School of Agriculture. Matt was employed as a landscaper, specializing as an arborist with Down to Earth landscaping in Pembroke, where he was also a member of the men's softball team. He also held an Emergency Medical Technician certificate. he entered the United States Army in January of 2006. He was a Christian, involving himself with the youth group at the North River Community Church in Pembroke. Matt was shot May 19 while searching for a fellow Massachusetts soldier and two others who were missing in Iraq. He underwent surgery in Germany and was flown to the United States on May 23. He was removed from life support at the National Naval Medical Center. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and an Army Commendation Medal. He was 22.
