Mary Ellen Flint Pendar, known to her family as Nellie, was the sixth of seven children and the only daughter born to Simeon Flint (1812-1876) and his wife Ellen Rebecca Pollard Flint (b. 1823) of Salem, Mass. On November 1, 1876, she married Oliver Simon Pendar, also a native of Salem, who had moved west to the Dakota Territory and founded a town named for his hometown. Nellie joined him there, but sadly died less than eight months after her wedding, reportedly of cancer. Her remains were returned to Massachusetts for burial in her family plot.
