Arthur was the youngest of eight children born to George A. And Laura Jane (Boatright) Abney. He married Lydia Banks in 1926 and they were the parents of one daughter: Doris Gwendolyn.

Arthur J. Abney, age 72, of 307 Southwest 12 Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, died on Saturday at Broward General Medican Center. Resident of Fort Lauderdale for 31 years. Charter member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.
Survived my daughter, Mrs. Doris Dellinger of Fort Lauderdale. Three sisters, Mrs. R. L. Owen of Miami; Mrs. Emma Odum of Harrisburg, Illinois; Mrs. Nett Moore of Canton, Illinois, three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be held, Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. at the Baird Case West Broward Chapel, Reverend Eugene Abernathy, officiating.
Interment will be at the Lauderdale Memorial Gardens.
