Born near Darbyville, a son of Joseph and Eliza Hillery Gulick, he came to Illinois in February 1856. On December 7, 1866, he marreied Louisa L. Everett. She died, January 1, 1913. The couple had six children: Edward, 62 1/2 E. Daniel; Joseph, 404 W. Church; Roscoe, 209 W. Church; Mrs. Harvey Cook, 798 Davidson Place; Clyde, Urbana; and Wilbur, Champaign. A graduate of Ashbury University (later Depaw University) he taught school for many years, later he studied law in the office of Judge C.B. Smith and was admitted to the bar in 1866. He lived at 308 Davidson Place, Champaign. Active in several Masonic organizations, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
