Benjamin was the son of Captain Joseph Swallow, who left his home of New Jersey and came to Luzerne County, Pa., when he was eighteen years old. Captain Joseph Swallow cleared a tract of timber land and constructed a good home, shouldering a musket in the War of 1812, where he earned a Captain's commission. Benjamin's mother was Mary Cooper, the daughter of George Cooper, who'd served in the Revolutionary War and witnessed the Wyoming Massacre of Luzerne County.

Benjamin received a common-school education and operated a small farm, which sat atop a coal mine. He sold this land in Luzerne and purchased farm land in Lackawanna County, upon which he built a log school house.
