OBITUARY.
MR JAMES DOW. The death occurred last Sunday evening, under tragically sudden circumstances, of a well-known resident of Gisborne, Mr James Dow, of 508, Palmerston Road. Mr Dow, who was a tailor by occupation had gone into a back room in his home, and collapsed. Dr. Rice was summoned immediately, but found it impossible to do anything. The late Mr Dow, who was well known in Gisborne and on the East Coast was born in Timaru in 1866 and went to that district, from South Canterbury in 1912, under engagement to Mr A. Zacharia, for whom he worked for a great number of years, first at Tolaga Bay. He had also been in the employ of Mr George Holmes. Mr Dow was a keen and clever chess player, and last year won the championship of the Gisborne Chess Club. He had apparently been in his usual health of late, though some months ago he suffered from a minor ailment. Mr Dow was a pupil of the Timaru Main School, and was also an Old Boy of the Timaru Boys' High School. He leaves a widow and four sons—Messrs Alan Hogan, of the Money Order Office. Gisborne, James Colin, of the Magistrate's Court staff, Gisborne, Peter Herbert, schoolteacher at Runarmia, Auckland, and Ernest Harold, of the staff of Messrs Grant and Cooke, surveyors, Gisborne, to all of whom the sincere sympathy of a very large circle of friends' both in Timaru and in Gisborne will he tendered. The late Mr Dow was a brother of Mrs A. K. Boys, of Timaru.
