Tom served in World War II in the US Navy Submarine Service aboard the USS Silversides. He was a fireman with the rank MOMM3C (Motor Machinist's Mate 3rd Class). The boat is now a floating museum in Muskegon, Michigan, where a reunion of its men was held (possibly the anniversary of the launch in 1941), and Tom once more fulfilled his job as fireman when they started her up.

Tom was a man of many interests and skills. He was a gifted carpenter, played country music with his band (Tom Ross and the Country Boys), a Mason and Shriner, Imperial Keeper of the Quill for the Grand & Glorious Order of The Hillbilly Degree (Shriner side-line degree that raises funds for Shriners Hospitals), and more.

Tom was close to his family. When his wife survived breast cancer, the two of them helped other couples deal with life after mastectomy.
