Wilma Baker, 86, of Sherman passed away peacefully March 20th, 2019 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson after suffering a severe stroke. Visitation will be held Friday, March 22 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and Saturday March 23rd at 10:00 a.m. at Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., also at Browning Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Endville Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home is honored to assist the family. Mrs. Wilma, as many students called her, was a career sixth-grade schoolteacher at North Pontotoc Attendance Center. She loved her profession, her students and her fellow teachers. She also loved the good folks of Sherman Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and played the organ for years and was a longtime member. She took special joy in illuminating young minds with Little House on the Prairie and relished a good discussion about when Jesus was coming back. Anyone within earshot could be regaled with stories of family history. Mrs. Baker graduated from the Sherman High School and later graduated from Blue Mountain College and Ole Miss. Mrs. Baker is survived by her son, Rex Baker of Brandon, her daughter-in-law Carol Baker, her beloved granddaughters Rachel Baker of Brandon and Hillary Mattei (Alec Mattei) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is preceded in death by her husband Alvis Baker, her beloved son Perry Baker, her parents, Helen and William Sample, and her brother Lynn Sample. Mrs. Wilma will be missed, but today is in perfect health and perfect peace, likely teaching sixth-graders in heaven. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Gateway Rescue Mission.
