Gen. W. Keith Weltmer, 89, Salina, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002.

Gen. Weltmer was born July 30, 1913, at Hiawatha. He graduated from Highland Junior College, Washburn University and University of Kansas, receiving an associate of arts, bachelor of arts, master of business administration and a juris doctor degree. He had worked for Dun and Bradstreet and was a professor at KU, Lawrence, and WU, Topeka. In 1958, he founded the Annual Kansas Tax Conference and was the first director of the KU Executive Development Program. He served in the Kansas Army National Guard during World War II and from 1948 until retiring in 1973 as a brigadier general and will be inducted into the Kansas National Guard Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Kansas Bar Association, American Accounting Association, Saline/Ottawa County Bar Association, American Economics Association, American Association of University Professors, American Business Law Association, Midwest Business Law Association, Midwest Business Administration Association, Kansas Federal Taxation Council and Kansas State Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Downtown Lions Club, serving on the board of directors, and the Education Committee Goals for Salina. He was an active fund-raiser for Boy Scouts of America.

He was preceded in death by wives Clare Hartnett Weltmer in 1999 and Elwill Shanahan Weltmer in 1983.

Survivors include two stepsons, Andrew Hartnett of Salina and Larry Hartnett of Jackson, Wyo.; two stepdaughters, Mary Bicknese of Bloomington, Minn., and Kathleen White of Austin, Texas; and two brothers-in-law, Charles Paul Mattson of Smolan and Tom Tucker of Salina.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at Ryan Mortuary, 137 N. Eighth, Salina 67401. Burial will be in Mission Hills Cemetery at Smolan, with military rites by Fort Riley.

Memorials are suggested to the University of Kansas School of Business.
