Obituary
Pastor Emeritus Robert Louis Jessie Sr.

"The days of our years are threescore years and ten: and if by reason of strength they be fourscore, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and we fly away" Psalms 90:10

Robert Louis Jessie Sr. was born on August 23, 1935 to Catherine and Lonnie Jessie in McAlester, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of seven children. Robert was affectionately nick- named "Two-Baby" by his mother. In 1953 he earned his high school diploma from L'Overture High School and later completed one year of college at Bishop College in Texas where he played football.

In 1954 he relocated to California where his older brother, Elmer Jessie resided. Soon after moving to California, Robert met and married the love of his life, Reola. God blessed this loving union with five beautiful children. Elder Jessie loved to sing and after meeting the late Pastor William Smith, he joined a quartet and sang in churches throughout Los Angeles.

Elder Jessie felt the call of God on his life and in 1963 rededicated his life to Christ and joined Bright Star Church of God in Christ in Los Angeles under the leadership of the late Pastor Wesley Dickson. He was an active member at Bright Star where he served as Deacon, Senior Choir President, Member of the Finance Board, YPWW President and Youth Pastor. Upon being ordained as an Elder he served as the Assistant Pastor until December of 1983.

For many years he ministered in nursing homes and hospitals all over Los Angeles. Elder Jessie had a big heart and loved people. He never met any strangers. He made everyone feel special; every person, every child and every grandchild thought they were his favorite.

Elder Jessie had a love for singing, praising God and biblical discussion. He loved the word of God and was an avid teacher of holy living. He was not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and would tell it where ever he went.

He loved his family and was a good provider. Elder Jessie gave Coca Cola thirty-five years of dedicated service and retired from the company in 1990.

In January of 1984 Pastor Jessie founded Challenge of Faith Church of God in Christ in the den of his home with his wife, children, and two kids from the neighborhood. His greatest joy was winning souls for Christ. He loved Challenge of Faith and taught his congregation love and faithfulness to God. Elder Jessie's faith and godly wisdom sustained him in times of trouble, sickness and heartache.

When his health began to decline he entrusted the church to his son, Elder Robert Jessie Jr., but he did not stop attending unless he was in the hospital. No matter how sick he was, he did not want to miss church; he believed the church was the saints' hospital.

Whenever he went into the hospital, his ministering continued and a revival would break out. Souls were being saved and healing was taking place. He would pray for the nurses, patients, doctors and anyone he came in contact with.

In February 2018 Pastor Jessie became bedridden but continued ministering to the masses: whether it was to those who would come by or via telephone to those who would call for prayer or counseling. He thoroughly enjoyed watching the church service videos, G.R.A.C.E. concert videos, old westerns and the Clippers basketball team.

On Thursday, March 14, 2019, The Lord said, "Well Done, Thy Good and Faithful Servant" and called Pastor Jessie home. Elder Jessie's parents and siblings, and one grandson preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Reola Jessie, his children; Kenneth Ray Jessie Sr. (Lu), Denise Wynn (Alex), Pastor Robert Jessie Jr., (Karen), Linda Crump (Bert), David Jessie (Renee), and (Dru), 16 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren; a host of beloved relatives, friends, Godchildren, spiritual sons and daughters and his dear friend Pastor James Francis.
