CANTON — James Windell Tipton, 82, of 54 Tipton Dr., died Friday, June 1, 2007, at his residence.
He was a native of Swain County, was a former resident of Catawba County and had lived in Haywood County for 45 years. He was the son of the late Robert and Amanda Davis Tipton and was also preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Tipton, in 1998.
He worked in construction as a carpenter and pipe fitter and was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church, where he played his guitar for the choir. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and playing his banjo at local nursing homes. James was also an Army veteran, having served in World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lois Davis Tipton; two daughters, Shelbia Crawford and her husband, Avery, and Shirley and her husband, the Rev. Billy Ferguson; a son, Jimmy Tipton and his wife Kelly, all of Canton; a son-in-law, David Tipton, of Maryville, Tenn.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 4, at the Chapel of Wells Funeral Home of Canton, with the Revs. Ted Reeves and Billy Ferguson officiating.
Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be Dwayne Ferguson, Burnis Tipton, Ralph Tipton, Harold Tipton, Millard Nations and Earl Nations. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Lokerson and Eddie Hollifield.
