The Right Honourable Lord Kennet
The 2nd Lord Kennet, d. May 7 aged 85, was a crusading left-wing journalist who transferred his deep concern for the world to the chamber of the House of Lords when he inherited his peerage in 1960. British writer and politician, notably concerned with planning and conservation.
Wayland Hilton Young b. August 2 1923, the only son of the 1st Lord Kennet, Edward Hilton Young 20 March 1879-11 July 1960 (aged 81, son of Sir George Young, 3rd Baronet 1837–1930), a barrister and gallant naval commander in the First World War who then became Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Secretary for Overseas Trade and Minister of Health before being ennobled in 1935. Wayland's mother was the sculptress Kathleen Scott, who had married his father in 1922 after being widowed in 1912 by the death of Captain Robert Scott in the Antarctic; his half-brother was the naturalist Sir Peter Markham Scott #42185749
Outside the political arena he was chairman of the Council for the Protection of Rural England; founding secretary of the campaign for the abolition of censorship; a campaigner for listed buildings, which included St Pancras station; a member of the Redundant Churches Fund; a chairman of the Avebury Society; and patron of Action for the River Kennet.
Wayland Kennet is survived by his wife, their five daughters and a son, Thoby, who succeeds to the peerage

Wayland Hilton Young, 2nd Baron Kennet (2 August 1923 – 7 May 2009) was a British writer and politician, notably concerned with planning and conservation. As a Labour minister, he was responsible for setting up the Department of the Environment and the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. Later he joined the SDP. He lost his seat in the Lords, following the House of Lords Act 1999.
Lord Kennet m.1948 a sailor's daughter, Elizabeth Ann Adams, with whom he wrote several books. They had six children, one son William Aldus (Thoby) Young, and five daughters; Easter Russell, educationalist; the sculptor Emily Young; Mopsa English, educationalist; and the writers Louisa Young, aka children's author Zizou Corder and Zoe Young. Emily Young, described as an enigmatic and modish teenager in the 1960s, was the inspiration for the Pink Floyd song "See Emily Play".
