Virginia Governor, Politician, Judge and Lawyer. He graduated from the College of William and Mary, studied law and became an attorney. During the Revolutionary War, he commanded a unit of the Charles County Militia as a Captain. Tyler served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1778 to 1786, and was Speaker from 1781 to 1785. He was the Judge of Virginia's Admiralty Court in 1776 and again from 1786 to 1788, which also made him a Judge of the state Supreme Court. In 1788, he was Vice President of the state convention called to ratify the U.S. Constitution. From 1788 to 1808 Tyler was Chief Judge of Virginia's General Court, the state's highest judicial office. He was elected the 15th Governor of Virginia in 1808 and served until 1811. In 1812, President Madison appointed Tyler as Virginia's U.S. District Court Judge, a position in which he served until his death. Tyler County, West Virginia was named for him. His house at Greenway Plantation in Charles City County still stands and is a private residence. John Tyler Sr. was the father of the 10th United States President John Tyler (1790-1862).
