Obituary:
Kate staley Woodward was born in Joplin, Missouri, September 13, 1877, the daughter of John and Ornell Staley, one of four children, two boys and two girls.
A few years later the family moved to Denver, Colorado where she attended school. Later, Mrs. Woodward went to Lincoln, Nebraska to stay with her sister. While there she met John William Woodward. They were married March 27, 1893 at Elwood, Nebraska. To this union, thirteen children were born, three preceding her in death.
Mr. and Mrs. Woodward spent the first few years of their married life in Nebraska and Kansas and then decided to move west. They traveled by covered wagon across Wyoming and Idaho to settle in Oregon. This trip took several years, for they stopped and lived at Wheatland, Wyoming, where Mr. Woodward worked in a saw mill. Later the Woodward family followed the railroad camps, applying his trade as blacksmith.
After about a year in Oregon the family started back to Wyoming. They came into Jackson Hole over Teton Pass, July 4, 1902.
They resided in lander, Dubois and Riverton and also Victor, Idaho, coming back to Jackson Hole to stay in 1909.
Soon after this, they homesteaded on the Kelly Flats and later bought a ranch on Turpin Creek, which the Gros Ventre flood completely destroyed.
They moved back to the Kelly Flats and lived there until several years later when they moved to Jackson.
Here they lived in their home in the Bassett addition until the death of Mr. Woodward, three years ago.
Since then Mrs. Woodward has lived with her children and was living with her daughter, Mabel Shinkle at the time of her death, February 19, 1956.
She is survived by six sons, John, Pete, Bill, Ted and Chet of Jackson and Walter of Colburn, Colorado. Four daughters, Mabel Shinkle and Bessie Yale of Jackson, Dolly Greek of Butte, Montana and Nellie Crandall of Emmett, Montana. Also 54 grandchildren and 66 great grandchildren.
