Dema was born to Annie J. Gatzki Maisch and Christian Maisch on April 1, 1920, in Aberdeen. She was born the second of five children and grew up on the farm her parents homesteaded in Aberdeen. Dema graduated from Aberdeen High School, earned a lifetime teaching degree from the University of Idaho Southern Branch, and received her B.A. from Idaho State in 1971. For 21 years she taught elementary school. The first two of those years were in a one-room school house in Lower Presto (Firth), and the following years were in Aberdeen School District. She was passionate about teaching second graders to read well.
In October 1944 Dema married the love of her life, John H. Wonderly, at Camp Campbell, Ky. Following John's discharge from the Army in 1946, they lived in Washington State for three years. In 1949 they moved to Aberdeen. In 1993 she and John moved to Nampa to be near family.
Dema enjoyed playing bridge, ice skating and walking briskly. Spending time with family was especially important to her. She took pleasure traveling in the motor home, fishing and watching her grandkids' activities. Dema loved the Lord and was an active member of the United Methodist Church her entire life.
Dema is survived by her loving husband of 62 years; brother, E. Earl (Barbara) Maisch of Yakima; daughter, Kristine (Barry) Hopkins of Caldwell; son, John D. Wonderly of Nampa; granddaughters, Sara (Kevin) Murphy of Nampa; Megan Hopkins of Caldwell; grandson, John Christian Wonderly of Cape Hatteras; and great-grandchildren, Karen and Sean Murphy of Nampa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Arnold "Buster" Maisch and Fred Maisch; and sister, Odella Cornforth Wehrli.
The family wishes to thank family and friends for their expressions of love, prayers and cards. Special gratitude is extended to Dema's doctors and the caring ICU nursing staff at Mercy Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
