Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. He was gazetted for the award on January 15, 1858 for his actions at Boursekee Chowkee, the entrenched village in front of Busherutgunge, India, as a lieutenant in the 78th Regiment of Foot, British Army, on August 12, 1857. The redoubt was occupied by the enemy, who were causing heavy casualties among the 18th Regiment and it was decided to take the place by storm. The Highlanders dashed forward, with Lieutenant Crowe being the first in, followed by his men. In less than a minute the redoubt was captured. He remained in the British Army and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1875, as commander of the 1st Battalion of Foot. He died at the age of 50. Originally interred at West Norwood Cemetery in London, his grave was lost until it was discovered in 1957. In 1976 his remains were moved to Moth Garden of Remembrance at Uitenhage, Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality, Eastern Cape, South Africa. He was the first born South African to be vested with the Victoria Cross.
